DragnMail - Version 1.0 - Copyright (C) 1997-98 by W. Scott Dillman - All rights reserved. System Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------- This Application was designed to run on Windows 95/98/NT systems. Introduction ------------------------------------------------------------- This application was created as a way to quickly send email to individuals without having to launch a fat email client. The main interface accepts dropped files and determines MIME types by querying the system registry. It also has the ability to email directly from the clipboard. At this time it can only email image and text data stored on the clipboard. Text data is converted to plain ASCII text and appended to the mail message; image data is converted to a jpeg (using the supplied quality setting), and mailed as an attachment. Frequently used mail addresses are stored in an adressbook for convience. This application is freeware. Please see legal notice below. If you find DragnMail useful, drop me some email and let me know. The program was created using Borland C++ v5.02 Features ------------------------------------------------------------- -Drag and drop interface. -BASE64 MIME encoding for attachments. -Just over 300k in size. -Simple interface. -Can be hidden in system tray. -Mails both text and image data from clipboard. -JPEG compresses clipboard image data for transport. -Manages addresses. -Simple configuration. -Easily unistalls. -Needs no DLLs or other outside libs. -Attachments encoded based on MIME types in system registry. -Can be set to be always on top. -Can be placed anywhere on the screen by dragging. Useage ------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Sending mail and attachments: The application is realtively easy to use. The first thing to do after installation is to let DragnMail know where your SMTP server is. Start the application and click on 'config', you will then be presented with a screen titled 'Dragnmail Config' Fill out 'SMTP Server:', 'User Name:', 'Email Address:, and 'Port:'. 'Port' is already filled in with the number '25'; which is the most common SMTP port number. 'Email Address' and 'User Name' is what will appear in the from field of your message; something like: W. Scott Dillman The other settings are not as important. 'Use Sounds' sets the application to use the internal wav sounds for certain program actions; just for fun. 'Always on top' sets the application to be the top-most window on your desktop, which aids in drag and drop operations. The 'Jpeg Quality' setting tells the program how much to compress an image when sending it from the clipboard. The lower this number, the higher the compression, but the image quality will suffer. You can experiment with this number; but I almost always leave it at 100. 'Jpeg Quality' can only be a number from 0-100. Sending mail can be achived in a number of ways, but will always involve the 'Send Mail Information' dialog. To send a quick text message simply click on 'Send' from the main screen. You must fill out 'Name:' and 'Email Address:' fields. The application will remember the last 'Name:', 'Email Address:', and 'Subject:' you entered. Once you have entered a 'Name' and 'Email Address' you can add it to your addressbook by clicking on the 'Add Address to Address Book' button. This allows you to select it from the 'Address Book' drop-down box. Alternately you can remove the address by selecting it from the 'Address Book' drop-down box and then clicking on the 'Remove Address from Address Book' button. Once you have entered your recipients info you can then enter a simple text message in the 'Extra Body Text' area. There isn't much space because the idea of the application is to send quick bits of info and not to be a full fleged email client. You may then choose to send an attachment. You can send attachments from either the clipboard or from a file by clicking the radio button next to 'Send from clipboard' or 'Send from file' respectively. You can then click on the 'SEND' button to send your mail. If you chose 'Send from file' you will be presented with a file dialog where you can choose the file to send. If not the application will grab the info to send from the clipboard. Sending the mail may take a few seconds, but eventually a dialog box will appear to tell you if the mail was sent or not. If the mail did not reach the mail server you should check your SMTP server settings on the config dialog; both the server name and the port number must be corrrect. The simplest way to send attachments is to set the application to be 'always on top' in the config window and to drag files from Explorer to the application's main window. The 'Send Mail Information' dialog will appear and you can fill out the recipients info and add a short message and then click on 'SEND'. 2. Other functions: Hiding: The application can be hidden in the system tray (near the system time) by clicking on the 'Hide' button in the main application window. This allows you to set the program to be 'always on top' and not get in the way of your work. The application can be un-hidden by single-clicking on the program icon in the system tray. Moving: The application can be moved anywhere on the screen by left clicking anywhere in application main window that is not an active area and dragging it where you want it to be. An active area is defined by a white glowing rectangle. Installation ------------------------------------------------------------- DragnMail can be easily installed in any directory. Just double-click on the exe archive and follow the install screens. The only file needed is DragnMail.exe. The program requires no external dlls or other libraries. Although if you are reading this chances are you have already installed the program. File List: - DragnMail.exe The program. - Readme.txt This text file.
